\n\tThe launch of Commentary, a new Swedish niche fragrance brand, was at feted Dover Street Parfums Market on Friday night in tandem with Art Basel Paris.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI just had this urge to create something real,\u201d said Ludvig Goliath, founder and director of Commentary. \u201cI think it was because of AI and what it did to the world, in a way.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHe wished to work with original ideas and craftsmanship. \u201cMy mind just kept going back to my days working in a perfume bar,\u201d Goliath said. \u201cThat process is so real. I love the process \u2014 telling the stories of the perfumes and then having them have their unique experience.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI wanted to create those stories, but I didn\u2019t want to make conceptual stories just for the conceptuality of it,\u201d he said, explaining instead the stories would be real. Goliath turns to artists for these.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cArtists are much better at creating these stories,\u201d he continued. \u201cThey\u2019re much more real and honest, and especially with conceptual art.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tGoliath said: \u201cWith perfume, you also wear the artwork. Tonight, I\u2019m bringing it here, and tomorrow I\u2019m bringing it on a flight to other people. That means you live with the questions that artwork asks and also the ideas it explores. That\u2019s the uniqueness of it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tCommentary launched Friday with a first collaboration, with Belgian American artist C.B. Evans, the first \u201colfactive artwork\u201d called The Reckoner. It was developed with perfumer Mark Buxton and includes olfactive notes of geranium, cardamom, orange flower, incense oil, Bulgarian rose, cade, cedarwood, resins, sandalwood, amber, musk and incense.<\/p>\n

\n\tGoliath contacted Evans after pondering how often worlds and atmospheres are created through video and sound, but not scent.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI wanted to explore that,\u201d Goliath said. \u201cTherefore, I invited C.B., who is a world-builder in practice. This first scent is a memory in advance \u2014 like a scent from the future, from a world that C.B. imagines. When you wear it, it\u2019s a shield against the old world, but it\u2019s also a reminder that you are today creating this new world. You can sniff other people living in the new world out if they wear this perfume.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tCommentary, now available at DSPM and on commenatary.co, will launch its next scent in six months.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWe\u2019ll build a portfolio of \u2018olfactive artworks,\u2019\u201d Goliath said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
